Guide Your Guest to Greatness

Please use the "Day of Interview" checklist in Process Street to create your own "Day of Interview" script.

We are often asked about what questions to ask in an interview. Have you wondered what to talk about or if you should even have a script? Watch this:

Things to Ask Yourself When Crafting Questions:

1. What is the main theme and ideal takeaway from all guests? What do you promise your listeners during your introduction? What do you say they'll be able to do once they listen to any episode of your show. Make sure your questions extract that.

2. Are there 3-4 main themes you'd like to cover over the course of the year? You may, then, have 3-4 different guest segments that address each theme. OR you can cover all themes in the outline of a single episode.

3. What is something you love and are passionate about that all people share? Incorporate that into the show - even if with one final question.

Suggested Structure

Remember: the questions are your guide. DO NOT read directly from your list of questions when interviewing guests.

Questions 1-2: Ice Breakers and Warm Up

#1: Tell me about you. Ask follow up / clarifying questions if you need to open your guest up a bit more.

  • Tell me about yourself
  • What inspired you to _____?
  • What are you up to?

#2: Something most people don't know. In the Intake Form template you're provided, we recommend asking "what is something not many people know about you" - or something else kind of off-beat. This is a great way to penetrate the "formality" barrier that guests can sometimes arrive to the show with. You want a conversation, and asking something beyond the surface can help you get there quicker.

Questions 3-6: Based on Guest Research

These questions are customized once you book interviews with your guests.

Questions 7-11: The Meat of It

We create a more questions than we need. For most guests, expect to ask clarifying questions for at least half of the questions you ask.

It may be a good idea to have main questions, then list a few sub-questions to help guide you through follow up questions.

#7: Why did you start? What, specifically, did you originally want to get out of _______? What is the most beneficial outcome you’ve enjoyed from it?

#8: What's surprised you?

#9: Tell me something innovative when it comes to ____?

#10: What would you tell your "newbie" self?

- What is your best advice to someone starting out?

#11: What sets your ____ apart from the others?

Questions 12-14: Conclusion

#12: Where can people find you?

#13: What is a great "next step" for someone listening and this really resonates with?

#14: What is something that I didn't ask that maybe I should have?

FINAL QUESTION

Something you love that everyone can somehow relate to - it takes  your connection to another level.

For example, Tiffany asks her guests "what is your favorite restaurant and what do you order?" - because she loves food.
